Alvaro Arbeloa delivered a powerful message after Real Madrid’s Champions League play-off first leg against Benfica was overshadowed by a racist incident involving Vinícius Junior, an episode that led to a temporary suspension of play at the Estadio da Luz.
Speaking to the media post-match, the Real Madrid coach made it clear that there must be no room for discrimination in football, stressing that accountability is essential when such moments arise.
“Ask the Benfica player what he said to Vini Jr. Everyone in the world of football deserves to hear that answer,” Arbeloa stated.
“Zero tolerance for racism must be absolute for us, and we cannot allow these things to happen on a football pitch in 2026.”
Arbeloa was unwavering in his support for the Brazilian forward, insisting he had no doubt about what had been reported to him.
“I believe what Vini Jr. told me about what he said to him. I don’t think he would make something like that up, and I will never, ever doubt Vini Jr.’s words.
“I simply asked him if he wanted to continue playing. We were by his side, and whatever decision he made, we would be there for him,” he said.
“We always have to be there for him, and we are a team. I’ve always told them that we ride together and we die together.”
He added: “The referee told me he didn’t hear anything and can’t do anything about these kinds of situations.
“Whatever Vini Jr. decided, we would have been with him.”
Vini later scored a stunning goal, a moment that drew attention for both its quality and the emotion surrounding it. Arbeloa, however, kept the focus on standards and responsibility.
“I didn’t see Vini Jr.’s celebration, but I did see the fantastic goal.
“When Mourinho finds out what happened and what his player said, he’ll be the first to say he won’t allow it.”
Despite the controversy, Arbeloa praised his side’s overall display, insisting this unity and resilience is exactly what he expects from his team.
“Zero tolerance for this, and we’re very happy with the team’s performance. All the players had a very solid game, and this is the Real Madrid we want to see.”
