Atletico Madrid chief Alemany dismisses Alvarez’s exit talks

Atletico Madrid sporting director Mateu Alemany has reaffirmed the club’s intention to keep Julian Alvarez, despite ongoing uncertainty over the Argentine forward’s future.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the summer, with strong interests from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona.

The latter in particular have been long-term admirers of the Argentine and are hoping to seal his signature as they look for attacking reinforcements in the summer.

Alvarez joined Atletico in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth up to around €95 million from English side Manchester City, where he mostly played second fiddle to Erling Haaland.

Speaking during an interview, Alemany confirmed that the club are not looking to sell the player who is currently under contract until 2030.

“Julián is a player from Atletico”, Alemany stated.

“Atlético has very good players, and many clubs are interested in them. But we have not spoken to anyone, neither potential candidates nor candidates, neither from Barcelona nor with anyone.”

Alvarez has scored 13 goals so far this season and could be open to a move away from the club in search of a new challenge.

Meanwhile, Alemany also revealed Atletico’s stance on the future of Antoine Griezmann, who has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Orlando City in recent weeks.

According to the former Barcelona football director, he dismissed rumours regarding any potential transfer and revealed that the player remains committed to the club.

“Griezmann is at Atletico Madrid and has a contract for two and a half years, we have no information about this news, and he is an important player for the club”, Alemany said.

Atletico return to La Liga action on Saturday when they face Real Oviedo, hoping for a win to continue their challenge for a top four spot.
