Flamengo sack Filipe Luis despite massive win over Madureira

Brazilian club Flamengo have dismissed manager Filipe Luis hours after their emphatic 8-0 win over Madureira in the second leg of their Campeonato Carioca semifinal.

The Big Mengo also won the first leg 3-0 to claim an aggregate win of 11-0, reaching next Saturday’s final against Fluminense in their third consecutive final appearance.

Filipe Luis joined the club in September 2024, replacing former Brazil coach Tite and guided the club to seven trophies in his 100 matches in charge, averaging one trophy per 14 matches.

However, they already lost consecutive finals this year, finishing in second position in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana.

“Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him,” Flamengo said in a statement.

“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.”

A new manager will now be in the dugout when Flamengo play the Carioca final this weekend against rivals Fluminense.

Filipe Luis also guided the club to the Copa Libertadores in 2025, becoming the ninth player to win the competition as a player and also as a coach.

The former Chelsea defender also won the league title, the Copa do Brasil, the Supercopa do Brasil, amongst other titles during a successful spell at the club.

Flamengo are currently in 11th-place on the league standings with four points after three games and are six points behind leaders Palmeiras, although they have played a game lesser.
