Marco Silva has warned that Fulham F.C. must reach their “best level” if they are to overcome a resurgent Southampton F.C. in Sunday’s fifth-round showdown in the FA Cup.
The clash at Craven Cottage arrives at a time when Southampton are gathering serious momentum in the EFL Championship.
Since the arrival of new manager Tonda Eckert in November following the dismissal of Will Still, the Saints have surged up the table with an impressive run of results.
Indeed, a strong spell of six victories in their last eight matches has pushed the club to just one place outside the Championship play-off spots. As the FA Cup encounter approaches, Silva believes Southampton’s form makes them a dangerous opponent.
“They have been reacting very, very well, definitely,” said Silva.
“You see their recent form – not so recent, because it’s been already, I think, nine games unbeaten – most of them getting the three points, game by game.”
Furthermore, the Fulham boss acknowledged how significant Southampton’s turnaround has been.
Having previously battled near the bottom of the table earlier in the campaign, the Saints now find themselves within touching distance of the promotion race.
“And, of course, where they came from, in a bad position in the table, right now to be around the play-off positions shows they are in a good moment, definitely.
“They are in a moment that they can win football matches in a row. That is important, for sure gives them the confidence that they are going in the right direction.”
Silva is no stranger to the rigours of the Championship himself. Back in 2022, he guided Fulham to the title and automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Because of that experience, he understands how quickly momentum can transform a team’s fortunes.
As a result, the Portuguese manager expects Southampton to arrive in London full of belief and ready to prove their quality on a major stage.
“Coming to the end of the season, important moment of the Championship season, another competition definitely that if they are in the position they are right now, they want to come to Craven Cottage to show their quality.
“It’s up to us to be at our best level and to prove our quality, and to prove why we want to be in the next round of the FA Cup.”
With both sides chasing their own ambitions, Fulham seeking cup progression and Southampton riding a wave of league momentum, the stage is set for a fiercely contested FA Cup tie in west London.
