Joan Laporta hails support after re-election as Barcelona president

Joan Laporta has expressed gratitude for the backing he received after securing re-election as president of Barcelona in Sunday’s vote.

The 63-year-old was re-elected for a fourth term in office, defeating nearest challenger Victor Font in the election that took place at the club on Sunday.

Laporta secured 32,934 of the total 48,480 votes, while Font was only able to get 14,385 of the votes with 984 left blank and 177 declared void.

He also defeated Font when both of them contested in 2021, after taking over from Josep Maria Bartomeu.

“It’s great to see that members can still choose who represents us. This passion is a joy, it makes the club special, so thanks to Barça and all the members that voted today in a display of democracy”, Laporta stated.

Laporta first became the president of Barcelona in 2003 and spent two terms, ending his tenure in 2010.

Sandro Rosell took over when he left in 2010, before Bartomeu was in charge from 2014 to 2020.

Laporta was then re-elected into office in 2021, before securing the win this time around to mark his fourth spell as president.

The 63-year-old has led the club to sustained success during his tenures and will be hoping for more in the next five years.

“The result itself is conclusive and it gives us a lot of strength — so much strength that it will make us unstoppable,” Laporta added.

“We will keep defending Barcelona against everything and everyone. The upcoming years will be thrilling. They will be the best of our lives.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-2 on Sunday to keep their lead at the top of the La Liga standings.

Real Madrid’s win over Elche on Saturday had seen their lead reduced to just one point, but the gap is back at four after the big win.
