Ronald Araujo netted the only goal of the match as Barcelona sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano to strengthen their grip on top-spot in the La Liga race.
The Catalan giants dominated the encounter but were unable to score more than once and had goalkeeper Joan Garcia to thank for the win after he made several brilliant saves.
Araujo, who had come into the lineup in place of the injured Jules Kounde, scored in the 24th minute to seal maximum points for the champions.
Barcelona had entered the clash on the back of a 7-2 mauling of Premier League side Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday and were hoping for another good result in the league to move closer to a successful title defence.
Carlos Martin wasted the first real opportunity of the game for the visitors after he failed to beat Garcia from close range.
Raphinha then wasted two goalscoring chances as the scores remained goalless with both teams trading chances to break the deadlock.
However, the hosts scored first in the 24th minute as Araujo headed home from a Joan Cancelo’s corner kick to put Barca 1-0 ahead.
Raphinha then went close once more, before Lamine Yamal blazed an effort wide off target as the home side piled pressure on the visitors goal in search of a second.
Garcia then denied Alvaro Garcia, before making another fine stop to prevent Unai Lopez from grabbing an equalizer for the visitors.
The Spanish goalkeeper was at his best once again to prevent Jorge de Frutos from scoring as Barcelona held on to secure a 1-0 win.
Araujo’s goal proved to be enough as the Catalan giants recorded their 24th league win of the season and remained in pole position to successfully defend their league title.
