Chelsea’s Fernandez leaves door open for future transfer

Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernandez is open to a move away from the club this summer, but remains fully committed to helping them finish the season strongly.

The Argentine midfielder joined the Blues for a former British-record transfer fee worth £106 million from Portuguese club Benfica in January 2023, but could now be set for an exit at the end of the current season.

Fernandez has been a major player since arriving at the club, helping them to successes in the UEFA Europa League last season and also to the FIFA Club World Cup last summer.

His contract expires in 2032, but an early exit could be on the cards especially if the London club fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Speaking during an interview, the Chelsea midfielder denied an agreement with another club, but refused to close the door on an exit.

“We’ll see after the World Cup”, Fernandez stated.

“We’ve had zero talks as of now. Honestly, nothing yet (with Real Madrid).

“Now I am focused on Chelsea and what’s left in the last few games this season”, the Argentine added.

Fernandez has attracted interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid and European champions Paris Saint-Germain, although a move to the former appears more likely.

Los Blancos have not properly replaced both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos who have both left the club and have identified Fernandez as their top-target for midfield reinforcement.

While Chelsea will be reluctant to let him leave, the 25-year-old would still be allowed to leave if a substantial bid arrives.

The former Benfica midfielder has scored 12 goals and provided six assists across all competitions this season and will be hoping to help the Blues finish the season strongly and challenge to win the FA Cup, which remains their only available trophy this season.
