Mohamed Salah set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season

to a successful career after reaching an agreement with the club.

The Egyptian superstar signed a two-year contract extension last year which was supposed to end in 2027, but has now agreed an exit after a mutual agreement with the Reds.

However, he suffered from a dip in form earlier in the current campaign and was left on the bench for three consecutive matches, before giving an interview accusing the club of ‘throwing him under the bus’.

The 33-year-old moved to Anfield in 2017 from Italian side AS Roma and has established himself as one of the greatest players in Premier League history.

Salah guided Liverpool to a record-equaling 20th English top-flight title last season, winning the golden boot and the playmaker of the season award for finishing with the most goals and assists in the Premier League.

The former Chelsea winger has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances so far for the Merseyside club and has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as an FA Community Shield.

“Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool Football Club at the end of the 2025-26 season,” Liverpool said in a statement.

“The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

“Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.”

Salah is also fourth on the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts with 191 goals and reached 50 goals in the Champions League in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Galatasaray this month, becoming the first African player to achieve the feat.

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life,” Salah said in a video on X.

“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not of this club. We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present.

“And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.

“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family”, he concluded.

Salah’s next destination remains unknown, although it is very likely he secured a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

For Liverpool, they must begin the search for a successor and they have already been linked to the likes of Anthony Gordon and Yan Diomande.
