Gareth Barry has thrown his support behind Martin O’Neill, insisting the experienced tactician still has what it takes to lead Celtic to Scottish Premiership glory.
As the title race enters its decisive stretch, Barry believes O’Neill’s wealth of experience could prove to be the game-changer.
The former Aston Villa midfielder, who spent four years under O’Neill, knows firsthand the manager’s ability to steady the ship when it matters most.
Even though their relationship hit a rough patch in 2009 following Barry’s failed move to Liverpool, the Premier League icon still rates O’Neill highly.
“You look at the business end of the season, and the players and sometimes the manager that’s been there before just swing it in your advantage,” said Barry.
“But yeah, it’s just a different feeling this year with Hearts in the mix. It’s great to watch, and I think it’s attracted a lot more attention with people wanting to watch a bit more of the Scottish league. Neutrals will definitely be wanting to see Hearts get over the line.
“Celtic, I’m not surprised by the bounce they had with Martin because I know the way he manages.
“He’ll come in and bring the confidence back to everyone and get a team that’s settled rather than make loads of changes, get everyone in their right positions, and just simplify things.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish strongly and nick it from the other two. The experience he’s got there, been there and done it, will give him a little edge over the other two managers.”
Meanwhile, the Scottish title race has taken an intriguing twist, with Hearts emerging as serious contenders and drawing increased attention to the league.
As the tempo rises, every fixture now carries title implications.
Up next, Celtic shift focus to a crucial away clash at Dens Park against Dundee, managed by Steven Pressley. This comes just weeks after their setback against city rivals at Tannadice, a result they will be eager to bounce back from.
As the run-in gathers pace, all eyes will be on whether O’Neill can orchestrate another late surge, and potentially steal the title right at the finish line.
