Bayern Munich play down Kompany exit talks amid Manchester City interest

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has dismissed reports linking manager Vincent Kompany with an exit from the club this summer.

The Belgian joined the Bavarians last season and guided the club to the Bundesliga title in his first year in charge as they reclaimed their title from Bayer Leverkusen.

The 39-year-old also led Bayern to the German Super Cup title earlier in the campaign, while they are on course to win a second consecutive league title this season.

However, the former Burnley manager has been linked with a return to Manchester City to replace Pep Guardiola, who could leave at the end of the season.

Guardiola’s contract expires next season, but it is very likely that he departs in the current campaign, leaving City to begin their search for a replacement.

Kompany’s name has been mentioned at the club, as well as the likes of former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca and Como head coach Cesc Fabregas.

Eberl, meanwhile, has brushed off those speculations, reaffirming Kompany’s commitment to fulfilling his contract which runs out in 2029.

“Let them have a go; he’s under contract until 2029”, the Bayern Munich sporting director said.

“Even though he’s only turning 40, he’s already one of the very best in the coaching profession. Because he’s a very astute, intelligent person.

“Please emphasise the word ‘person’! People have always had respect for him. But he makes that respect grow every day. Simply by being himself.

“He brings the experience he gained as captain of a top-flight team to bear before every match. That quality is fantastic; his composure does us a world of good”, Eberl concluded.

Bayern Munich take on Freiburg today in the Bundesliga, hoping for a win to edge closer to a second consecutive league title.
