Controversy took centre stage as Nottingham Forest were denied what could have been a decisive goal against FC Porto in their Europa League showdown.
In a pivotal second-half moment, Igor Jesus reacted quickest to a loose ball after Omari Hutchinson delivered a dangerous cross.
The forward challenged goalkeeper Diogo Costa, seized possession, and calmly fired into an almost empty net, seemingly putting Forest ahead.
However, just as momentum swung in Forest’s favour, referee Marco Guida blew for a foul on Costa, chalking off the goal and halting celebrations.
The decision left players visibly stunned, especially as there was minimal protest from Porto’s side.
As the debate rolled on, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett weighed in; and did not hold back.
“This is an incorrect decision by the match officials, given that this was the goalkeeper who made the mistake coming out and failing to gain possession of the ball,” said Hackett.
“He stayed on the ground and the referee stopped play and disallowed the goal.
“This was a good goal which was incorrectly ruled out.”
From a match-flow perspective, the call proved crucial. Instead of taking a 2-1 advantage, Forest had to settle for a 1-1 draw heading into the return leg at the City Ground.
As the tie remains finely balanced, the disallowed strike could yet loom large.
For Forest, it’s a case of regrouping and going again; while questions over officiating decisions continue to echo long after the final whistle.
