Manchester City thrash Chelsea to close in on Arsenal in title race

Manchester City recorded a convincing 3-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, to reduce the gap at the top of the standings and set up a fascinating finish to the season.

Arsenal suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, which had given City a chance to reduce the gap to six points with a win at Stamford Bridge with a game in hand.

Chelsea’s last win over Manchester City came back in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final when they sealed a 1-0 win, but needed a result to keep pace with the top five in the race for Champions League.

The Blues had the better chances in the first half and had the ball in the back of the net but Marc Cucurella had strayed offside in the buildup.

Pedro Neto was also denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma, before Bernardo Silva and Rayan Cherki were denied by Robert Sanchez as the first half ended goalless.

However, Manchester City turned up in the second half and scored three times in 17 minutes to seal the rout.

Cherki crossed into the box and Nico O’Reilly, who has enjoyed a remarkable run of form of late, headed into the net in the 51st minute to break the deadlock.

Cherki then provided the assist for the second goal after his mazy run found Marc Guehi, who finished confidently past Sanchez for 2-0.

Moises Caicedo was then caught in possession, allowing Jeremy Doku to steal the ball and fire past Sanchez as City took control of the game.

The win moved them up to 64 points on the standings, six points behind Arsenal who have played a game more ahead of both side’s crucial showdown at the Etihad Stadium next weekend, which could play a big role in deciding the league winners.
