Former Manchester United star Rooney questions Liverpool leadership after PSG exit

Wayne Rooney has openly questioned Liverpool’s leadership after their Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds saw their European journey come to a halt in disappointing fashion, as a 2-0 defeat at Anfield sealed a 4-0 aggregate loss in the quarter-finals.

As the dust settled on the night, attention quickly shifted from the result to post-match reactions—particularly Ibrahima Konate stepping up for media duties.

Reacting to the situation, Rooney expressed surprise at seeing Konate front the cameras, suggesting a more senior figure should have addressed the media following such a significant defeat.

“I’m surprised to see him come out and talk. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Konate do an interview, it would’ve been nice to see one of the leaders come out, when you go out of a competition you want to hear from one of the leaders,” he said.

“I know they do come out and do a lot of the interviews but I think that was the wrong time for Konate to come out and do the interview.”

The comments add another layer to ongoing conversations about leadership within the Liverpool squad, especially after captain Virgil van Dijk previously responded to Rooney’s criticism earlier in the season following a tough run of results.

Meanwhile, Konate used his post-match interview to reflect on the team’s performance and what lies ahead, highlighting both the lessons learned and the standards expected at the club.

“Many things happened and we don’t have to forget that. The game today meant a lot of things because against PSG, who are a bit better than last season, to make a performance like that we have to build from that and realise how good we can be,” Konate said in an interview on the performance.

“It is minimum standard for Liverpool to play Champions League. We have six games left and we have to give all in those six games.”

As Liverpool regroup for the remainder of the season, the focus now shifts to how they respond on the pitch—while questions around leadership and accountability continue to linger off it.
