Arne Slot has shown his frustration at the officials after Liverpool were denied a penalty in their 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Anfield.
The Premier League champions were denied a spot-kick for a foul on Alexis Mac Allister by Willian Pacho, with the scoreline still at 0-0.
Despite initially awarding the decision in favour of Liverpool, the centre referee overturned the decision after a review on the pitchside monitor.
The Reds would go on to suffer a defeat, although the scoreline could have been different with the spot-kick.
Speaking after the match, Slot was unhappy with the decision and believes his side have been victims of poor decisions in several of their games this season.
“I’m not surprised as so many decisions have gone against us this season”, Slot stated.
“It’s quite simple. If the referee doesn’t give a penalty the VAR would have never overturned it but I’ve seen so many soft penalties given but people say VAR can’t interfere because there is contact. That is what we clearly see.”
Ousmane Dembele scored twice in the second half to seal a 2-0 win and a 4-0 aggregate result as PSG advanced to the semifinal of the competition.
Despite the defeat, Slot remains confident in Liverpool’s ability to challenge for trophies in upcoming seasons, after enduring a very difficult campaign this time around.
“Much has been said that the club is in a transition. The club has sold 8-10 players to make money to sign five or so very talented players”, Slot continued.
“We have to sell to buy. We are losing some players on a free transfer, Mo Salah and Andy Robertson.
“It is a big challenge in the summer but the club has shown this model works. As I said many times the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer”, he concluded.
Paris Saint-Germain advance to the semifinal of the Champions League and will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, while Liverpool will now shift their attention to securing a top-five finish in the Premier League.
