Newcastle United have received a significant boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Bournemouth this weekend, with Bruno Guimaraes potentially in line to return.
The club captain has not played since the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in February and has been forced to miss their last 12 games across all competitions with a hamstring injury.
Despite recovering from the injury problem, an illness forced him to also sit out last weekend’s disappointing league defeat to Crystal Palace.
However, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has revealed that the Brazilian could play a part in Saturday’s encounter.
“There is a chance [he could play]. We have seen him in training and he is pushing really hard to be back involved”, Howe said.
“The medical team are trying to hold him back… I say hold him back, there’s always that tug because the player is desperate to play and I love that with Bruno.”
Guimaraes has scored nine goals and contributed five assists in the Premier League this season and his return will come as a major boost for the club amid their poor form.
Newcastle have lost their last three games across all competitions and have only managed three wins from their last 10 league games, losing seven during this period.
This has left the club in 14th place on the standings and very likely to miss out on European football with only six games left in the season.
“I’ll make a decision based on what I see in training today but there is a chance”, the Newcastle boss concluded.
Newcastle United will now face a Bournemouth side who are unbeaten in their last 12 league games and are coming into the encounter on the back of a hugely impressive 2-1 win over league leaders Arsenal last weekend.
