Manchester United’s Fernandes eyes Champions League return after Chelsea victory

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United have taken a decisive step toward UEFA Champions League qualification following their crucial win over Chelsea.

United secured a narrow but significant 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, with Matheus Cunha delivering the decisive blow late in the first half.

As a result, the Reds strengthened their grip on a top-four finish while extending the gap over their closest challengers.

“It’s an amazing feeling for us. We had to bounce back – it’s not just about Leeds, there were two games that we didn’t win,” said Fernandes.

“But we knew we had to make a great performance today because Chelsea are a very good side and it was very important for us because we know our aim is to get in the top four and they are the closest one to the top five. Making distance is important for us and that’s what we need.”

In addition, the travelling supporters once again played a vital role, creating a strong atmosphere that lifted the team throughout the contest.

“They were amazing, already in the warm-up I felt they were on it.

“Every away ground we go, we feel at home and that was no different today.”

Fernandes was at the heart of the action, providing the assist for the winning goal, his 18th in the league this season, and earning the Player of the Match award for his commanding display in midfield.

“I say every time I want to do better than the season before. I want to improve my game overall.

“I need to improve every week because I want to become a better player and end my career as the best as possible.”

With the victory, United now sit comfortably in third place, holding a significant advantage over Chelsea in sixth with just five games left in the race for European qualification.

Momentum, therefore, is firmly on their side as the season enters its decisive run-in.

“I feel three points closer, we have another game that we have to win.

“We know we need points to get that place secured and we will do everything possible to be as quick as possible.”

Next up, United shift focus to a challenging fixture against Brentford at Old Trafford, where they will look to maintain their winning rhythm and edge even closer to sealing a return to Europe’s elite competition.
