Szoboszlai calm over Liverpool contract talks

Dominik Szoboszlai has downplayed concerns surrounding his contract situation at Liverpool, insisting his focus remains firmly on the pitch as the season reaches its decisive run-in.

The Hungarian midfielder, who has been a standout performer despite Liverpool’s inconsistent title defence, confirmed there has been little movement regarding a potential extension beyond his current 2028 deal.

“There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” said the 25-year-old after Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win at Everton.

“We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that.

“Of course I see myself here in the long term but, as I say, it is not really in my hands any more.

“I love being here, as I said many times. I’m completely relaxed.

“We have five games to go, then I am going to rest – a big one – after my international break. Then we will see.”

Meanwhile, attention quickly shifts to Liverpool’s thrilling Merseyside derby triumph, where late drama defined the contest.

After Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, Everton fought back through Beto, setting up a tense finish.

However, deep into stoppage time, Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head home a dramatic winner, sealing all three points for Arne Slot’s side.

Szoboszlai admitted the manner of victory made it even more special, especially given the fierce rivalry and late drama.

“I’d rather win it like this than 3-0 or something, you know,” continued Szoboszlai.

“This is more enjoyable to watch I think for the fans for both sides, actually. At the end, maybe they [Everton] were the unlucky ones but we are happy to take the three points.

“It felt amazing. To win a derby like this in the last second, we couldn’t ask for more.

“We were happy for each other to get the three points but also for the fans, because we know what it means for them, and also it means a lot for us to win a derby.”

The victory has strengthened Liverpool’s push for a UEFA Champions League spot, opening a gap over chasing rivals with just five games remaining.

Nevertheless, Szoboszlai stressed the importance of maintaining focus as the pressure intensifies.

“A win always changes the mood, but we have to stay on the floor and keep working hard every day,” Szoboszlai added.

“We have to keep fighting for the Champions League spots and it is going to be hard games ahead of us.

“It is always hard when you play against the teams that are close to you – Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace. You have to always be ready and to fight for them.”

As Liverpool gear up for a crucial finish to the campaign, Szoboszlai’s calm approach, both on and off the pitch, could prove vital in their bid to secure a return to Europe’s elite competition.
