Harry Kane has praised Bayern Munich’s mentality following their 4-3 win over Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Bavarian giants, who sealed a 13th league crown in 14 seasons last weekend, came back from a three-goal deficit from the first half to seal a memorable win over their opponents.
Vincent Kompany had given rest to several regulars with one eye on their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, but the decision almost backfired as they were already behind by three goals in the first half.
The Belgian made some changes at the interval and Bayern rallied from three goals down to clinch victory in the second half.
“We said at halftime that we needed to bring more energy and intensity in,” Kane said.
“And I think you saw that from the first minute of the second half. Obviously you need to show quality too, and I think we did that with the goals we scored.
“Credit to everyone — coming back from 3-0 down at halftime shows the mentality we have.”
Nicolas Jackson, Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Kane were all on the scoresheet for the Bundesliga champions to complete the comeback.
The winner also marked Kane’s 53rd goal across all competitions and it was the third time in Bundesliga history that a team won a natch after trailing by three goals in the first half.
“The first half was tough. We fell below our usual standard in terms of how we approach every game, we didn’t control the counters well enough, our defensive cover wasn’t good enough. We were a bit sloppy with the ball”, Kane concluded.
Bayern Munich’s focus will now shift to their heavyweight Champions League meeting with champions PSG in midweek, with the first leg of their semifinal clash holding at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
