Ronald Koeman has described the loss of Xavi Simons as a major setback for the Netherlands national football team ahead of the World Cup, following confirmation of a serious knee injury.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture during last weekend’s narrow win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, a blow that sidelines him for at least six months and rules him out of the global showpiece.
As the Oranje regroup, Koeman admitted the timing and impact of the injury are significant, both for the player and the national setup.
“It is especially dramatic for the player himself, who is also fighting against relegation with his club,” Koeman said.
“The only plus in his case is that he is young. He will definitely play in major tournaments in the future, but that doesn’t change the fact that this injury is dramatic.
“You could see from his reaction (on the field) that it could be serious.
“We were waiting for the tests, and that turned out to be bad news. That is dramatic for us; he is a player with a lot of talent and potential.”
From a tactical standpoint, Simons’ absence leaves a creative gap in the Netherlands’ attacking options, forcing Koeman to rethink his approach ahead of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Spurs must also navigate the closing stretch of the season without one of their key attacking outlets.
As the countdown to the World Cup continues, both club and country now face the challenge of adapting without one of their brightest stars.
