Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon will be assessed closer to kick-off as Newcastle United prepare for a crucial showdown with Brighton & Hove Albion at St. James’ Park.
Heading into their penultimate home fixture of the season, the Magpies are looking to bounce back after a difficult run, having suffered four straight league defeats.
However, momentum could swing if Gordon returns, with the winger edging closer to full fitness after time on the sidelines.
“He [Anthony Gordon] did part of a session on Wednesday. It was great to see him back on the pitch. He’s a player of huge quality and one that we’ve missed.
“We’ll make an assessment on his fitness closer to the game and see what he gets through today.”
Meanwhile, Howe turned his focus to the bigger picture, urging his side to build on recent improvements and sharpen their edge at home.
“We need to keep the level of performance where it was against Arsenal. The team looked good, it looked confident, it defended well. I think it was a big upturn.
“We need to back that up at home, our home form has not been strong enough. A lot riding on this weekend for us.”
As the season enters its decisive phase, Newcastle must shift gears quickly.
With home support behind them and key players nearing a return, Howe’s side will aim to regain rhythm and finish strongly.
