Jamie Carragher has praised England manager Thomas Tuchel for making what he described as brave and uncompromising decisions in naming his World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Tuchel’s 26-man squad raised eyebrows after several high-profile omissions, including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Adam Wharton, and Harry Maguire.
However, Carragher believes the German coach deserves credit for putting team chemistry ahead of star power.
“We were surprised by one or two names missing out but I really admired the manager,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“It shouldn’t be too much of a shock given the way he has spoke about how important harmony is in the camp. He picked harmony and energy over talent.
“He reiterated that it wasn’t about the 26 most talented English players, it was about putting together a team at the World Cup that can go as far as it possibly can. It’s about being a team, together, and not individuals.”
The former Liverpool defender admitted he wished he had experienced a similar management style during his own England career, highlighting Tuchel’s willingness to make unpopular calls without outside influence.
“I wish he were the England manager when I played. It doesn’t look like he’s taken anyone else’s view into account.
“He is a strong-willed character, we know that from his time at Chelsea, and he picks what he thinks is best.
“You are never going to keep everyone happy, he has something about him. He won’t be swayed by people or the eyes on him will sway him. He’s going to make the big decisions.
“I have so much admiration for the manager; there was no fear. It takes a manager with a strong character to make those decisions and he has done.”
Tuchel’s squad selection has already become one of the major talking points ahead of the World Cup, with supporters and pundits divided over the omission of several established stars.
But Carragher believes the England boss has made it clear that collective mentality, intensity, and dressing-room unity will be the foundation of his tournament strategy as the Three Lions aim to challenge for global glory this summer.
