AC Milan have dismissed head coach Massimiliano Allegri following the club’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The Rossoneri needed a win in their final game of the season against Cagliari at the San Siro to book their spot in next season’s UCL and despite scoring as early as the second minute to take the lead, they fell to a 2-1 defeat and missed out
Despite a strong start to the season, a run of six defeats in their final 10 matches of the Serie A season led to a second straight absence, with AS Roma and Como qualifying alongside Inter Milan and Napoli.
“After last season’s disappointment, the owners’ mandate for the club was clear: return to the Champions League and build the foundations for success and a consistent position at the top of Serie A”, AC Milan revealed in a statement.
“For much of the season, we remained in the top two of the league, with a real chance of competing for the Scudetto.
“However, the season’s finale was far below the level we’d shown up to that point, and last night’s disappointing defeat turned this season into an unequivocal failure.”
Allegri only rejoined the club for a second spell last May when he replaced Sergio Conceicao.
However, he now leaves the club alongside CEO Giorgio Furlani, Sporting Director Igli Tare, and Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada in a major overhaul by the club.
“It’s time for change and a profound reorganization of the Club’s sporting department. Effective immediately, the tenures at AC Milan of CEO Giorgio Furlani, Sporting Director Igli Tare, Head Coach Massimiliano Allegri, and Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada conclude.
“We extend our thanks to each of them for their work and dedication during their tenure at the Club.
“Further announcements regarding these new appointments will be made as soon as they are finalized, with the goal of having a structure in place for next season.”
AC Milan have not made a decision on Allegri’s replacement, but will be keen on a new appointment before the commencement of their preseason duties.
