Northern Ireland have secured the long-term future of Michael O’Neill after the national team manager signed a new four-year contract extension running until 2032.
The agreement continues O’Neill’s second spell in charge after returning to the role in 2022 and reinforces the Irish FA’s commitment to stability and long-term development.
O’Neill has already cemented his place as one of Northern Ireland’s greatest managers, overseeing a record-breaking 104 matches for his country.
The experienced coach recently took temporary charge of Blackburn Rovers in February, successfully guiding the Championship club to safety while balancing his Northern Ireland duties.
Despite speculation over a permanent role at Ewood Park, O’Neill opted against remaining with Blackburn and instead committed fully to the Northern Ireland national team project.
His decision highlights his belief in the progress currently being made with the squad ahead of the next international cycle.
O’Neill remains best remembered for leading Northern Ireland to UEFA Euro 2016 — the country’s first major tournament appearance in three decades.
He also guided the team to promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League after topping League C Group 3 in 2024.
More recently, Northern Ireland narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification after suffering a play-off defeat away to Italy earlier this year.
Speaking after signing the extension, O’Neill expressed pride in continuing his journey with the national side and reaffirmed his commitment to building future success for Northern Ireland football.
