West Ham United back Nuno despite Premier League relegation

West Ham United have confirmed Nuno Espirito Santo will remain in charge despite the club’s painful relegation from the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager had been locked in discussions with the club’s hierarchy since Monday regarding his future following the Hammers’ drop into the Championship.

However, both parties have now agreed to continue together as West Ham prepare for a crucial promotion push next season.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the club reaffirmed their commitment to the former Wolves boss.

“We held meetings with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo early this week and are pleased to confirm that he has expressed his continued commitment to the club – as we have to him.

“Nuno made it very clear that he is highly motivated for the challenge of guiding West Ham United back to the top flight at the first time of asking. That must be the unquestionable goal for next season.

“Nuno has spent one previous year in the Championship and it was an outstanding success as he secured 99 points to win the title with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018.

“While the ultimate outcome on Sunday was a painful one, the board of directors believe that there have been broader signs of improvement and progress in recent months, and we want Nuno to continue developing that progress.”

West Ham ended the campaign with 39 points after defeating Leeds United on the final day, but it still proved insufficient to avoid relegation.

Their total became the highest points tally for a relegated Premier League side in 15 years, underlining the brutal nature of the survival battle this season.

Nuno replaced Graham Potter in September after a disastrous start to the campaign and won 12 of his 37 matches in charge at the London Stadium.

Despite suffering relegation, the club’s leadership believe there were encouraging signs under the Portuguese coach and are now backing him to lead an immediate return to the Premier League.
