Former Arsenal star Walcott backs Tuchel’s bold World Cup squad calls

Former England winger Theo Walcott has backed Thomas Tuchel’s decision-making after the Three Lions boss omitted several high-profile stars from his squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Tuchel raised eyebrows with the exclusion of notable names such as Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White, opting instead for a squad he believes is best equipped to challenge for football’s biggest prize.

While the selections have sparked debate among supporters and pundits, Walcott insists Tuchel deserves the trust to build a squad capable of delivering success on the world stage.

The former Arsenal forward, who famously earned a surprise call-up to England’s 2006 World Cup squad as a teenager, believes squad harmony and tactical balance are more important than individual star power.

“Thomas Tuchel’s definitely got it right because he’s the man that’s taking this team to go and win the World Cup,” Walcott told Sky Sports.

“He knows the best players for the best roles. It’s not about individual players anymore. It’s a different kind of era.

“There are a lot of role models in this team. Tuchel’s the man to make those decisions. He’s built a squad and environment that’s going to be positive. It’s his first big test. The connections they have with the fans is key if they want to go on and win it.

“It’s important he builds those positive influences around the squad. Everyone’s squad is going to be different.”

The ex-England international added: “He’ll have made decisions that people won’t agree on, but he will have made the tough ones which at times could change a game.

“You need big players. You might need players who haven’t featured at all. Suddenly they come in and make the difference.

“He will know when that is the time because he will have seen them not just on the pitch but off it too. He can’t please everyone.”

The England manager’s selections underline his commitment to building a squad based on tactical needs, versatility and dressing-room chemistry rather than reputation alone.

With expectations high ahead of the World Cup, Tuchel has shown he is prepared to make difficult decisions in pursuit of success.

Walcott believes that approach could prove crucial when England faces the challenges of tournament football.

England head into the tournament with genuine ambitions of ending their long wait for major international silverware.

While some supporters may question the omission of several star names, Walcott is convinced Tuchel’s choices are driven by a clear vision.

As the World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on whether Tuchel’s bold selections can deliver the ultimate reward and bring football’s biggest trophy back to England.
