Tom Heaton signs contract extension at Manchester United

Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year extension at Manchester United, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026-27 season.

The former Burnley goalkeeper rose through the club’s academy before leaving during the early days of his career and returned in 2021 for a second spell.

He has made just three appearances for the first-team since returning, and has mostly played as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, providing experience for the younger group of the squad.

The 40-year-old has now penned a new one-year contract and will be hoping to add more minutes under his belt during the upcoming campaign.

“I think any time spent at this football club, as a player, is incredible,” Heaton said.

“So to extend for another year, I’m absolutely delighted.

“I think the club’s in a really good place, we’ve had some really good results this season. We’re back in the Champions League, looking forward to moving forward, so it was a very easy decision.”

Manchester United enjoyed a remarkable improvement from the 2024-25 season when they finished in 15th place, ending the season in third spot this time and sealing a return to the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils are eyeing massive summer reinforcements especially in midfield, following the departure of Casemiro at the end of the season.

“It’s an important part, especially as a senior player. But to be brutally honest, I think a lot of that comes from competing every day”, Heaton added.

“We all know what the requirements are at this football club, and that’s winning.

“And I think, for me, yes, helping players is part of it, developing players is part of it, but it’s all geared towards getting this football club to be in a successful place”, he concluded.

Manchester United have also agreed a £38 million transfer for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, as they look to add more depth and quality ahead of next season.
