Germany’s World Cup preparations have suffered a major setback after highly-rated midfielder Lennart Karl was ruled out of the tournament with a thigh injury.
The Bayern Munich starlet, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents heading to the World Cup, sustained the injury during training ahead of Germany’s final warm-up match against the United States.
Karl was immediately taken to hospital for further assessment, with Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann admitting early fears that the injury was serious.
Those concerns were later confirmed as the teenager was officially withdrawn from Germany’s World Cup squad.
The injury brings a heartbreaking end to what had been a breakthrough season for Karl, who became Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League and had emerged as one of Germany’s brightest prospects.
Taking to social media, the midfielder shared his disappointment after learning he would miss football’s biggest stage.
“I have no idea where to start but it’s just indescribably painful being forced to miss the biggest tournament of all,” said Karl.
“I’ve done everything to be fit for the World Cup. Unfortunately injuries often come at the unluckiest time.”
Nagelsmann also expressed sympathy for the young midfielder, highlighting the qualities Karl brought to the squad both on and off the pitch.
“With his light-heartedness, his creativity, his pace, and his personality, he fit into the team perfectly.
“It is a huge shock for him and for all of us that he will miss the World Cup. It is only a small consolation that he is young and still has many tournaments ahead of him.”
Under FIFA regulations, Germany have moved quickly to replace Karl, with talented midfielder Assan Ouédraogo drafted into the squad.
The young midfielder now has an opportunity to make his mark on the global stage after impressing during previous national team camps.
“With Assan Ouedraogo we are now getting a player who, similar to Lenny, had a great start with us.
“He is also highly talented and is meant to play here boldly and freely.”
Karl’s absence leaves Germany without one of their most dynamic emerging talents heading into the tournament.
While the squad still boasts significant quality and depth, losing a player capable of changing games with his creativity and pace is a significant blow.
For Karl, the focus now shifts to recovery and returning stronger.
At just the beginning of his career, Germany’s rising star will hope this painful setback becomes only a temporary detour on a journey that still promises many major tournaments ahead.
