Brighton have rejected a second approach from Tottenham Hotspur for defender Jan Paul van Hecke, with chief executive Paul Barber confirming the club remains determined to protect its interests amid growing transfer speculation.
The Netherlands international has emerged as a key target for Spurs, particularly given his previous working relationship with current Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi during their time together on the south coast.
Van Hecke, who has just one year remaining on his current contract, joined Brighton from Dutch side NAC Breda in 2020 for an initial fee of £1.8 million and has since developed into one of the club’s most reliable defensive performers.
Speaking about Tottenham’s interest, Barber revealed that Brighton have already turned down two offers for the centre-back.
“Yes, we have rejected a bid from Tottenham over the last week or so, in fact, two bids,” he said.
The Brighton chief stressed that any potential transfer must benefit both the club and the player, while also aligning with the club’s long-term strategy.
“From that point of view, it has to be right for us as well as the player.”
Barber also highlighted Brighton’s commitment to supporting head coach Fabian Hurzeler as the club prepares for another demanding Premier League season.
“We have to be in a position to make the best trades to suit our model and also to make sure that we’re supporting Fabian [Hurzeler], because he’s got another big season ahead of him.”
Tottenham’s continued interest signals their determination to strengthen defensively ahead of the new campaign, but Brighton’s stance suggests any move for Van Hecke will require a significantly improved offer.
For now, the Seagulls remain firm, with one of their most valuable assets still firmly part of Hurzeler’s plans despite growing attention from North London.
