Jose Mourinho is set to make a dramatic return to Real Madrid after Florentino Perez secured re-election as club president at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Perez, who overcame challenger Enrique Riquelme in the vote, confirmed the Portuguese manager’s expected comeback during his victory speech, having previously signalled his intention to bring Mourinho back if re-elected.
Reports indicate that Mourinho, currently in charge at Benfica, has already agreed a three-year deal to take over at the Bernabeu, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed following Xabi Alonso’s departure in January.
Speaking after his re-election, Perez outlined his ambitions for the next phase of his presidency, including silverware targets and renewed focus on Real Madrid’s global stature.
“We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles,” Perez said.
“I am still here and I am here to defend Real Madrid.
“We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup.
“We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the best stadium in the world.
“Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista like Jose Mourinho.
“And rest assured, with me as president, Real Madrid has been, is, and will always remain owned by its members.”
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning LaLiga and the Copa del Rey while restoring the club’s competitiveness in Europe.
Despite his success in Spain, the 63-year-old has not lifted a league title since his Premier League triumph with Chelsea in 2014–15.
His anticipated return marks one of the most high-profile managerial comebacks in modern football, with expectations already rising ahead of a new era at the Bernabeu.
