Celtic receive Scottish Professional Football League punishment after pitch invasion incidents

Celtic have been fined £10,000 ($13,000) and placed under suspended sanctions following pitch invasions by supporters during their final two league matches of the season.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has also taken disciplinary action against Motherwell, Inverness, Hamilton and Stenhousemuir after a series of incidents last month.

Despite the punishments, none of the clubs will face immediate restrictions on supporter attendance.

Celtic supporters entered the pitch at both Fir Park and Parkhead after dramatic stoppage-time goals against Motherwell and Hearts.

The matches were unable to restart after the invasions, with Hearts expressing concern following their title-deciding defeat.

“Reports of serious physical and verbal abuse towards our players and staff, both on the pitch and elsewhere, are deeply disturbing,” said a Hearts statement.

Celtic were fined £7,500 over the Hearts incident and will face a potential 1,000-seat capacity reduction at Celtic Park if a similar significant pitch invasion occurs during an SPFL match within the next two seasons.

The club also faces a possible 100-ticket reduction for an away fixture if supporters repeat a major pitch invasion or are involved in dangerous pyrotechnic displays away from home.

The away sanction follows flare displays during celebrations after Celtic’s win at Motherwell.

Motherwell were fined £2,500 following incidents during their 3-2 defeat by Celtic, including fireworks and a pitch invasion.

The club could see Block E of the John Hunter Stand closed for one match next season if there is another significant pitch incursion or similar pyrotechnic behaviour.

Both Celtic and Motherwell must also refer at least five supporters to the SPFL Trust’s pyrotechnic awareness course.

“Supporters entering the field of play in any circumstances is wholly unacceptable and puts players, fans and match officials at significant risk of physical harm,” an SPFL spokesperson said.

“The use of pyrotechnics at matches is illegal and highly dangerous.

“The SPFL has been repeatedly clear that there is no place for this behaviour in Scottish football.

“We will continue to work together with stakeholders, including the Scottish FA, Police Scotland and Scottish Government, to address challenges surrounding unacceptable conduct at matches.”

Inverness were fined £1,000 after a pitch invasion during their match against Hamilton, which led to clashes between rival supporters. They will face a partial stand closure if a similar incident happens within the next two years.

Hamilton also received a £1,000 fine and a formal warning following incidents during their play-off clash with Clyde.

Stenhousemuir were given a potential 150-seat sanction if supporters repeat the pitch invasion that followed their play-off victory over Alloa.

The SPFL said it will continue working with football authorities and security bodies to prevent further incidents at Scottish football grounds.
