Arsenal head of sports medicine Dr Zafar Iqbal has announced his departure from the club after two years in the role.
The medical chief, who replaced Gary O’Driscoll following his move to Manchester United, confirmed that both parties agreed to part ways after discussions.
Reports had suggested the decision was linked to Arsenal’s review of their injury issues during the season, but Dr Iqbal remained clear that the move was the right step for both sides.
“After a challenging but ultimately successful season, and following discussions with the club, we have come to a mutual agreement to part ways,” he said.
“This will enable me to take a short break after 21 consecutive years in professional football.
“While there has been speculation online around the reasons for my departure, the simple truth is that after the success of this season the time is right for both parties to move in a new direction.
“I wish everyone at the club the very best for the future.”
Dr Iqbal’s exit brings an end to a two-year period overseeing Arsenal’s sports medicine department as the club continues to focus on improving player fitness and availability.
The former medical lead leaves after a season Arsenal described as successful, with the club now expected to consider its next move behind the scenes.
