Erling Haaland wasted no time proving why Norway coach Stale Solbakken called him the “best goalscorer in the world” before the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Manchester City striker delivered a dream debut on football’s biggest stage, scoring twice in Norway’s 4-1 victory over Iraq at Boston Stadium to mark the nation’s return to World Cup competition with a statement performance.
Haaland’s clinical first-half finish showed the instincts that have made him one of the most feared forwards in world football, and the 25-year-old admitted the moment carried huge personal meaning.
“I think most people saw how I felt on the big screen [inside the stadium], so I don’t think I need to tell too many people!” Haaland said.
“But it feels good, of course, and I’m proud. I’m incredibly proud to make my World Cup debut and to win Norway’s first World Cup match in 28 years.”
The striker’s first two World Cup goals helped Norway secure a perfect opening result, with Haaland celebrating both the team’s achievement and his individual milestone.
“My first goal was nice, the second even nicer, so it’s fantastic and I’m proud of everyone that we could get off to a good start.
“We were expected to win and we won fortunately. Now everybody in Norway will be happy and I hope people will party!”
Haaland’s incredible international record continues to rise, with the forward now boasting 57 goals in 51 appearances for Norway.
The striker has also played a key role during Solbakken’s time in charge, scoring 51 goals under the Norway manager and developing a strong relationship with the national team boss.
“First of all, the relationship is good. You have seen that since he started with the national team. We have been developing a good relationship, and we have been performing well on the pitch. That’s the most important thing,” Haaland added.
Despite his coach’s huge praise, Haaland refused to place himself above football’s other elite finishers, highlighting his hunger to keep improving.
“As for being the best goalscorer, I think I’m up there. But I don’t think I scored the most goals this season, so statistically I’m not. I think Harry Kane and [Kylian] Mbappe scored more goals than me. So, no, I’m not.”
Norway’s World Cup campaign has begun with confidence, and Haaland has already made one thing clear — he is ready for the biggest stage.
