Iran challenge World Cup restrictions with FIFA complaint

Iran’s World Cup campaign has been overshadowed by travel challenges after the national team confirmed plans to submit an official complaint to FIFA over restrictions affecting their movement during the tournament.

The Football Federation of Iran is preparing to challenge the arrangements that have limited the team’s access to the United States, where all three of their group-stage matches are being played.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei recently described his squad as the “most oppressed” team at the tournament, highlighting the difficulties faced by the players and staff during their World Cup preparations.

Unlike other participating nations, Iran have not been permitted to stay in the United States throughout the group stage.

Instead, they are only allowed to enter the country one day before each match and must leave immediately after the fixture.

The restrictions forced Iran to abandon plans for a US-based training camp.

The team instead established their base in Tijuana, Mexico, creating additional logistical challenges during their preparations.

Ahead of their upcoming clash against Belgium in Los Angeles, Iran requested permission to arrive two days before the match to allow more recovery and preparation time.

However, that request was rejected.

The Football Federation of Iran confirmed that it will now take the matter to FIFA through official channels.

“Despite the technical reasons presented by the federation, the request was once again denied.

“The federation will formally express its dissatisfaction and lodge an official complaint with FIFA through the appropriate channels.”

The federation had faced a similar situation before Iran’s opening Group G match against New Zealand, also held in Los Angeles.

That request for additional time in the country was also denied.

The travel difficulties have extended beyond the players, with several members of Iran’s coaching staff and federation officials reportedly unable to secure visas to enter the United States.

Despite the challenges, Iran remain focused on their World Cup campaign and preparing for their next fixture.

However, the federation believes the current arrangements have created unnecessary obstacles for the team during football’s biggest international tournament.

FIFA has been contacted for a response regarding Iran’s concerns and the travel schedule imposed on the squad.
