Bounou hails Morocco’s patience after record Scotland win

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou believes patience and tactical discipline were the key ingredients behind the Atlas Lions’ historic victory over Scotland at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The North African side produced a composed performance at Boston Stadium, securing a crucial 1-0 win that pushed them to the top of Group C with four points and strengthened their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

Bounou highlighted Morocco’s ability to handle pressure and remain focused against a Scotland side packed with experience and determination.

“I think we played a very good game against a strong opponent, with players with a lot of experience,” said Bounou.

“I think we had a lot of patience and we were able to create chances, although they were in a very, very low block.

“In the last ten minutes they pushed a little more and, when we had to step back, we did it well.”

The decisive moment arrived early in the contest when Ismael Saibari produced a moment of brilliance to give Morocco the lead.

The forward raced beyond the Scottish defence after connecting with a perfectly weighted pass from Brahim Diaz.

Saibari controlled the ball before firing a powerful finish beyond Angus Gunn and into the roof of the net.

The goal was not only the match winner but also a piece of history.

Saibari’s strike became the fastest goal recorded at the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far and Morocco’s quickest ever goal at the tournament.

Despite Scotland’s attempts to fight back, Morocco showed the defensive organisation and maturity that Bounou praised.

The Atlas Lions absorbed late pressure, maintained their structure and protected their advantage until the final whistle.

For Bounou, the result reflected a team that understands how to compete at the highest level.

Morocco’s ability to create opportunities while staying calm under pressure proved decisive.

Even when Scotland increased their attacking intensity in the closing stages, the Atlas Lions remained disciplined and avoided costly mistakes.

The victory places Morocco in a strong position in Group C, ahead of Brazil’s fixture in Philadelphia.

With confidence growing, Bounou believes the team’s mentality will continue to be one of their biggest strengths as they chase further success on football’s biggest stage.
