Trump set to present World Cup trophy in final ceremony

United States president Donald Trump is set to take centre stage at the FIFA World Cup final after FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed he will present the trophy to the tournament winners.

The historic ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will lift football’s most prestigious prize.

Infantino revealed the plans during an interview with Fox and Friends, confirming that Trump will be involved in one of the biggest moments of the tournament.

The FIFA president and Trump have developed a close relationship during the build-up to the finals, with the US president expected to play a prominent role in the closing celebrations.

“We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course,” Infantino said.

When asked whether they would jointly present the trophy, Infantino responded: “Of course, we are together all the time.”

The announcement follows Trump’s previous involvement at last year’s Club World Cup final, also hosted in the United States.

During that ceremony, Trump remained on the winners’ podium after handing the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James following their triumph.

Although Trump has had limited public involvement with the World Cup since the tournament began on June 11, his presence at the final is expected to attract global attention as football’s biggest event reaches its climax.

The trophy presentation is traditionally one of the most iconic moments of the World Cup, bringing together champions, officials and global figures on the pitch immediately after the final whistle.

For FIFA, the 2026 tournament represents a major milestone, with the competition being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The final at MetLife Stadium will provide the closing chapter of the expanded tournament.

As teams continue battling for a place in football history, attention is already turning towards the grand finale and the moment one nation will celebrate becoming world champions.

Trump’s planned role ensures the trophy ceremony will carry an additional spotlight when the world watches the winners lift the famous gold trophy.
