Tottenham Hotspur are wasting no time in shaping a new era under Roberto De Zerbi, and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the club’s early transfer activity shows a clear ambition to compete at the highest level.
Spurs have already moved quickly in the summer market, securing the signing of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in a deal worth £52 million while also adding experience and depth with free transfers including Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka.
The north London club are now looking at another major addition, with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali emerging as a target.
Carragher believes a potential move for the Italian midfielder could benefit both player and club as De Zerbi continues to build a squad capable of challenging near the top of English football.
Speaking about Tottenham’s transfer approach, Carragher highlighted the urgency and ambition shown by the new Spurs boss.
“I think Tonali to Spurs will probably be good for both parties,” said Carragher.
“You can see straight away with De Zerbi, they want to get things done quickly, but he wants his players there as soon as possible, and pre-season starts soon.
“They’ve made a lot of signings early on. He’s not messing about. He did a really good job when he came in, kept them up, but he’s not at Tottenham to be in the middle of the table.
“He wants to be getting Tottenham back, challenging for those Champions League positions.
“He’s a top coach, and it looks like he’s attracting some top players. I think Tonali is that.”
De Zerbi’s arrival has brought renewed optimism around Tottenham after a period of rebuilding.
Carragher believes the Italian coach is not simply focused on maintaining Premier League status but is aiming to restore Spurs as regular contenders for European football.
The former Brighton manager has built a reputation for attacking football and developing players, qualities that Tottenham’s hierarchy appear keen to support with early recruitment.
With several additions already completed and more expected, Spurs are sending a strong message that they want progress quickly.
Carragher’s comments reflect the growing belief that De Zerbi’s project is built around competing, not just surviving.
The next stage will be turning that ambition into results, but Tottenham’s aggressive approach in the transfer market suggests the club are ready to make a serious push under their new manager.
