Haaland proud despite Norway’s World Cup exit

Erling Haaland’s sensational FIFA World Cup 2026 journey came to an emotional end on Saturday night, but the Norway captain walked away with pride rather than regret after England edged the Scandinavian nation 2-1 in an enthralling quarter-final in Miami.

For the first time in the tournament, the Manchester City striker was successfully contained by an opposition defence as Thomas Tuchel’s England produced a disciplined display to end Norway’s historic run.

Jude Bellingham scored twice, including the decisive extra-time winner, to send the Three Lions into the semi-finals.

While the result ended Norway’s dream of lifting the World Cup, it did little to diminish what has been a breakthrough tournament for Haaland and his teammates.

Before facing England, Haaland had been virtually unstoppable. The prolific striker had scored seven goals in four matches, tormenting Iraq, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Brazil with his ruthless finishing and relentless movement inside the penalty area.

However, England succeeded where every other defence had failed.

Marc Guehi and John Stones produced an outstanding defensive performance, limiting Haaland to just two headers throughout the contest.

One effort was comfortably saved by Jordan Pickford, while the other drifted wide of the target.

The Norwegian star eventually left the field exhausted during extra time after spending much of the evening battling England’s disciplined back line.

His influence was restricted throughout the contest as England prevented him from finding the dangerous spaces that had made him the tournament’s most feared striker.

Despite the disappointment of elimination, Haaland chose to focus on the bigger picture after the final whistle.

Rather than dwelling on defeat, the 25-year-old reflected on how Norway’s remarkable World Cup campaign has elevated both his own profile and the standing of Norwegian football on the global stage.

“These things are surreal; I think this has changed me as a person. I think my profile has grown a bit, let’s put it that way, and… It’s hard to even process it all right now when I look back at the games, but it’s incredibly special to be part of an event like this – something I used to watch from the sidelines, and now I’m living it first-hand.

“I feel immense pride, and I’m genuinely moved when I think about how well we performed, the sense of unity back in Norway, and the positivity and joy we’ve felt both there and here.”

His words reflected a player determined to celebrate Norway’s achievements despite falling just one step short of the semi-finals.

Containing Haaland is rarely the responsibility of one defender alone.

England recognised that stopping the Manchester City forward required a collective effort, with Stones and Guehi receiving constant support from the midfield and full-backs whenever Norway looked to launch attacks.

Haaland managed only two shots on target, attempted just nine passes and completed seven before being substituted in extra time.

Compared to his devastating display against Brazil in the previous round, where he registered four attempts on goal and completed every one of his 11 passes, England’s defensive discipline made a decisive difference.

It was a tactical masterclass from Tuchel’s side, who denied Haaland the space he thrives on inside the penalty area.

Although Norway’s World Cup adventure has ended, Haaland believes the tournament has transformed the perception of Norwegian football.

The striker admitted he has close friendships with several England players through Manchester City, but stopped short of declaring support for the Three Lions’ quest for the trophy.

“I’ve got my City teammates here, that’s true. I grew up in England, and the first shirt I ever owned was an England one. It’s a special country. But I have teammates from France and Spain too.”

Instead, his attention quickly shifted towards Norway’s future.

“This has been my goal for a long time, and I think after this tournament, we’ve put Norway on the map, so to speak. Now it’s about maintaining those standards. I’m incredibly proud.

“We proved that it’s possible to beat one of the biggest teams in the world, Brazil. We lost to England in the end, but we made them fight for it. Perhaps it could have gone differently.

“We’ve got more World Cups and Euros ahead of us; I think it’s time for us to really establish ourselves. We’ve got a fantastic generation.”

Although Norway’s remarkable World Cup run has come to an end, Haaland departs as one of the tournament’s standout performers.

His seven-goal haul announced Norway as a genuine force on the international stage, while his leadership has given the nation renewed belief that this talented generation can challenge for major honours in the years ahead.
