Bayern Munich star Kane targets World Cup glory with England

Harry Kane believes England are closer than ever to ending decades of World Cup heartbreak, but insists the Three Lions must finally find the “missing piece” as they prepare for a mouth-watering FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against defending champions Argentina.

England secured their place in the last four after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, with Jude Bellingham’s brilliant brace keeping Thomas Tuchel’s side on course for global glory.

The triumph means England have now reached their second World Cup semi-final in three tournaments, adding to consecutive UEFA European Championship final appearances in what has become one of the most successful eras in the national team’s modern history.

The England captain wants this generation to be remembered for lifting a major trophy rather than simply coming close.

Reflecting on England’s remarkable consistency at major tournaments, Kane admitted the squad has repeatedly shown it belongs among the world’s elite.

However, he believes the next challenge is turning promise into silverware.

“It’s been an extremely successful era of our national team. Of course, we want to get over the line. That is the missing piece now,” said Kane.

England have consistently challenged for honours in recent years, but heartbreak has followed in decisive matches.

After reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and suffering back-to-back defeats in European Championship finals, the current squad is desperate to rewrite history.

Kane believes the opportunity is now within touching distance.

“We’re knocking on the door. We’re getting to these semifinals and finals. It’s a big week. We’ve got eight days left on this tournament.”

The Bayern Munich striker also praised the commitment shown throughout the tournament, highlighting the unity that has developed within Tuchel’s camp during six demanding weeks together.

“We’ve been together six weeks and shown every bit of desire for the badge and we’re going to need an even bigger push now for the last week or so.”

England once again relied on Jude Bellingham to deliver when it mattered most.

The Real Madrid midfielder scored both goals against Norway, taking his tournament tally to six and further strengthening his status as one of the standout performers at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

His extra-time winner sealed England’s passage to the semi-finals after a fiercely contested battle in Miami, where temperatures reportedly felt as high as 44 degrees Celsius.

The victory showcased England’s resilience, but it also exposed areas requiring improvement before facing Argentina.

Despite the victory, Thomas Tuchel was far from satisfied with England’s overall display.

The German coach challenged his players to raise their standards ahead of the semi-final, believing stronger performances will be essential against Lionel Messi and the reigning world champions.

Although England have found ways to win throughout the knockout rounds, the captain knows that simply grinding out victories may not be enough against one of international football’s most complete teams.

“Ultimately we are in a semifinal of the World Cup and that has not always been the case for this national team so we have to enjoy it.”

His comments reflected a balanced mindset—celebrating England’s achievement while recognising that the biggest tests are still to come.

England’s reward is a blockbuster semi-final against Argentina, led once again by Lionel Messi.

Victory would send the Three Lions into the World Cup final, where either France or Spain would stand between them and football’s greatest prize.

It promises to be England’s toughest challenge of the tournament, but one Kane believes his teammates are ready to embrace.

With Bellingham producing match-winning performances, Tuchel demanding higher standards and Kane providing inspirational leadership, belief continues to grow inside the England camp.

Now, after years of near misses, England stand just two victories away from ending their long wait for World Cup glory.

For Kane and this talented generation, the mission is clear. The progress has been undeniable, the consistency impressive, but only lifting the trophy will complete England’s remarkable journey and finally provide the “missing piece” they have spent years searching for.
