Manchester City’s Rodri undergoes surgery amid Real Madrid speculation

Manchester City’s preparations for the new season have received an unexpected setback after the club confirmed that midfield star Rodri has undergone successful back surgery.

The Spain international, widely regarded as one of the world’s finest holding midfielders, underwent a minor procedure on Monday after dealing with persistent discomfort over an extended period.

While the Premier League champions remain optimistic that his rehabilitation will be relatively brief, his recovery will be closely monitored as City begin a new era under head coach Enzo Maresca.

The announcement also arrives at a time when Rodri’s future continues to generate significant transfer speculation, with Real Madrid reportedly maintaining a strong interest in bringing the 30-year-old back to Spain.

Manchester City, however, remain focused on ensuring their midfield leader returns to full fitness before any discussions surrounding his long-term future take centre stage.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the club confirmed the successful outcome of the operation.

“Manchester City can confirm Rodri has undergone successful minor back surgery.”

The statement continued: “The midfielder had been feeling discomfort for some time but has now undergone a procedure to address the issue and will now begin a short period of rehabilitation.”

The update will undoubtedly provide some reassurance for City supporters, particularly as the club described the recovery period as expected to be short rather than long-term.

Rodri has become one of the most influential players at the Etihad Stadium since arriving from Atletico Madrid, establishing himself as the heartbeat of City’s midfield with his composure, tactical intelligence and ability to dictate the tempo of matches.

His importance was once again highlighted during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumphant campaign.

The midfielder’s outstanding performances throughout the tournament further enhanced his global reputation and reportedly intensified Real Madrid’s long-standing admiration for the player.

Interest from the Spanish giants has continued to dominate transfer headlines throughout the summer.

With only one year remaining on his current Manchester City contract, uncertainty surrounding his future has naturally increased.

Despite that situation, reports indicate City remain determined to retain one of their most valuable players and have not abandoned hopes of agreeing a new long-term contract.

Negotiations are expected to continue once Rodri has progressed further in his rehabilitation, although the Premier League champions are also understood to be preparing for the possibility of a formal approach from Real Madrid before the transfer window closes.

Aware of the uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s future, City have already strengthened their options by completing the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

The arrival of the highly-rated midfielder provides additional depth in the centre of the pitch and offers Maresca greater flexibility should Rodri’s recovery take longer than anticipated.

Nevertheless, replacing the Spaniard’s influence remains an enormous challenge.

Few midfielders in world football combine defensive awareness, passing range, leadership and positional intelligence as consistently as Rodri, making him one of the first names on City’s team sheet whenever fully fit.

For Maresca, the immediate priority will be ensuring his midfield general returns without unnecessary risk.

The club’s medical staff are expected to oversee a carefully managed rehabilitation programme aimed at restoring Rodri to peak condition ahead of the demanding months that lie ahead.

While transfer speculation is likely to continue dominating headlines, Manchester City’s immediate focus is firmly on the player’s recovery.

Should rehabilitation proceed as expected, Rodri could return in time to play a key role in City’s pursuit of domestic and European honours once again.

For now, though, the champions must briefly cope without one of the game’s most complete midfielders while remaining hopeful that both his recovery and contract situation ultimately deliver positive outcomes for the club.
