Tottenham Hotspur have secured another important piece of their defensive future after Micky van de Ven signed a new contract with the club.
The Premier League side confirmed the Netherlands international’s renewal on Tuesday, keeping one of their most important defenders in north London as new head coach Roberto De Zerbi continues to shape his squad.
Tottenham have not disclosed the exact length of Van de Ven’s new agreement. His previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2028-29 season.
For Van de Ven, however, the decision was about more than simply extending his time at the club. The defender says he remains fully committed to Tottenham’s long-term project.
“It’s a special moment to sign a new deal and a proud moment for me and my family,” Van de Ven told club media.
“I’ve always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here. I love the club, I love the fans and I’ve developed really well here.
“It’s clear the direction the club wants to go in and I want to be a part of it. I’m excited about what’s to come.”
Van de Ven’s new contract represents a significant boost for De Zerbi, who has identified the defender as an important part of Tottenham’s plans.
The Italian manager was quick to praise the 25-year-old’s ability, mentality and ambition, describing him as one of the leading centre-backs in European football.
“Micky is one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us,” De Zerbi said.
“He has the qualities, mentality and ambition that we want at Tottenham Hotspur, and I am very happy that he has decided to continue his journey with the club.
“We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future. His decision to sign a new contract shows his belief in what we are creating together.”
The renewal also comes at an interesting point for Tottenham’s defence, with club captain Cristian Romero expected to leave this summer amid reported interest from Atletico Madrid.
That could see Van de Ven take on an even greater leadership role at the heart of Spurs’ backline.
Van de Ven joined Tottenham from Wolfsburg in August 2023 and has since established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders.
He has made 75 appearances for Spurs, with his pace, recovery ability and composure becoming key components of the team’s defensive structure.
His profile rose even further during Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in the 2024-25 campaign.

Tottenham eventually avoided relegation with a final-day victory over Everton, before De Zerbi’s arrival at the end of March helped change the mood around the club.
The north London side have also been aggressive in the transfer market.
They broke their transfer record twice in quick succession, bringing in Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million before signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100m.
The message from Spurs is clear: the club intends to compete at the highest level again.
Keeping Van de Ven is another major part of that strategy.
The defender will now enter the new campaign with his future settled and expectations rising.
With Romero’s future uncertain and De Zerbi implementing his ideas, Van de Ven could become one of the central figures around whom Tottenham build their defence.

Tottenham will conclude their pre-season preparations against Hoffenheim at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday before opening their Premier League campaign against Brentford in west London on August 22.
