West Ham United have wasted little time making their ambition clear ahead of the new Championship season.
Interim chief executive officer Karim Virani has confirmed that the Hammers have one overriding objective: secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
Following their relegation, West Ham face the challenge of navigating the Championship for the first time in years.
For Virani, however, the club’s focus is already firmly fixed on getting back to the top flight at the first attempt.
With the opening game less than a week away, preparations are entering their final phase, and Virani believes the support of the West Ham fanbase could prove crucial.
Speaking ahead of the new campaign, Virani acknowledged how quickly the new season has arrived while highlighting the importance of unity across the club.
“As we look ahead to the new [league] season, it’s less than a week now and we have our first match, which has come around incredibly quickly,” Virani said.
“The strength of the West Ham family in terms of supporting our team is going to be so crucial to our objectives as a football club – and everyone is aware we have one primary objective this year, which is to get out of the Championship and back to the Premier League.”
West Ham are not viewing the Championship as a long-term destination. The expectation is that the club will compete strongly from the opening weeks and put itself in position to challenge for promotion.
While promotion is the immediate sporting priority, Virani stressed that West Ham’s responsibilities extend beyond results on the pitch.
The interim CEO insisted that the club must continue using its platform to create a positive impact within the wider community.
“While it becomes very easy to quickly focus on the football, we should never forget the responsibility we have as a football club to drive positive action and impact off the pitch too.”
That balance between sporting ambition and community responsibility was at the heart of Virani’s appearance at a recent West Ham event.
Virani was speaking at a West Ham United and Inclusive Irons event featuring Desi Ballers, held to mark the conclusion of South Asian Heritage Month.
The event was also attended by club ambassadors Matt Jarvis and Bobby Seagull, underlining the club’s continued efforts to strengthen its relationship with supporters and communities beyond matchday football.
For West Ham, the challenge now comes on two fronts.The first is obvious: rebuild on the pitch and fight for promotion.
The second is maintaining the club’s wider identity and commitment to positive change while dealing with the pressure that comes with relegation.
The Championship is notoriously demanding, with a long season, relentless fixture schedule and numerous clubs capable of mounting promotion challenges.
West Ham’s resources and top-flight experience will make them one of the teams expected to compete near the top, but Virani knows expectations alone will not deliver promotion.
The Hammers will need consistency, squad depth and strong support from their travelling and home fans.
Virani’s comments have therefore set the tone before the first ball is kicked.
