Fulham may have walked away from Craven Cottage empty-handed, but Alvaro Arbeloa believes his side showed exactly the kind of character that can define their Premier League campaign.
The Cottagers suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night in a thrilling west London derby that also marked the Premier League managerial debuts of Arbeloa and Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea needed just 31 seconds to break the deadlock through Joao Pedro, but Fulham refused to fold.Instead, the hosts weathered the early pressure before finding their way back into the contest.
Josh King levelled the score and gave Fulham renewed belief before Chelsea eventually regained control through Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Gonzalo Garcia pulled another goal back for Fulham before the hour mark, setting up a frantic final period.
Despite their late push, Arbeloa’s men could not find the equaliser.
The statistics, however, offered plenty for the Fulham boss to build on.
Fulham registered 14 shots and produced strong numbers in possession, forward passing and successful passes in the final third.
For Arbeloa, the performance was less about the result and more about the identity he wants his team to establish.
“I think we keep improving and that will take time. But it’s the first game of the season and I have been seeing all the games in the Premier League and you can feel that no one is ready,” Arbeloa said.
“But I saw tonight the energy that I want to see, the high press that we want to make.
“And like I said to my players, we are going to play in this way and we’re going to try to play in this way no matter who is in front of us.”
He added: “So that’s not easy because we are going to face very good teams with very top players, but we are going to try for sure.
“And we need to play with that character and that ambition and that energy that is very important for us that we fight from the first minute until last.”
One of the biggest positives for Fulham was the performance of 19-year-old Josh King.
The academy graduate played a key role in Fulham’s response after Chelsea’s early opener, earning special praise from Arbeloa.
The Fulham manager believes King possesses the raw talent to become an important player but insists the youngster must now add goals and consistent end product to his game.
“I have been talking all summer with Josh King. What a player you have here. Amazing. What a player. Unbelievable.
“But I knew his talent, but with talent and with quality for this type of player, it’s not enough,” he said.
“They need to make numbers like Gonzalo or like Oscar [Bobb] or like Cesar [Palacios] or Kevin.
“We have very young players with a lot of talent, but they need to score goals because at the end it’s the most important thing in football and I hope they can score many goals this season.”
The defeat highlighted the fine margins separating Fulham from one of the Premier League’s heavyweight sides, but Arbeloa’s message was clear: his team will not abandon its attacking identity.
The Spaniard wants Fulham to press aggressively, play with intensity and maintain their belief regardless of the opposition.
Chelsea exposed some areas that still require work, but Fulham’s response after conceding so early could prove more significant in the long run.
For a manager taking charge of his first Premier League game, Arbeloa’s biggest takeaway was not the scoreline.
It was the fight, energy and ambition displayed by his players.
