Arbeloa demands aggression as Fulham face Sunderland test

Alvaro Arbeloa has challenged Fulham to bring aggression, character and belief when they travel to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

The Fulham manager knows his side will be stepping into one of the Premier League’s most demanding environments, with Sunderland expected to draw energy from their home supporters.

Arbeloa’s first Premier League game in charge ended in disappointment as Fulham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Craven Cottage on Monday.

But there was an immediate response in midweek.

The Cottagers produced a much more convincing display in the Carabao Cup, sweeping aside AFC Wimbledon 3-0 to book their place in the next round.

Sunderland also began their Premier League campaign with defeat, losing 2-1 away to newly promoted Ipswich Town.

However, their return to the Stadium of Light gives them an opportunity to respond in front of their own supporters.

Arbeloa believes Fulham must be ready for the challenge from the opening whistle.

The former Liverpool defender has experienced the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light himself, having played there twice during his career.

That experience has given him a clear understanding of what Fulham can expect.

“We know away games are always very difficult here in the Premier League, so we need to play with the same character, same mentality, that we did at home, but it won’t be easy for us,” he said.

“When you play away, it’s always difficult because of the atmosphere, and the home team feel the confidence and they want to play in front of their fans and in front of their supporters.

“So, for us, if we want to play in the way that we want to play, we need to do very well, be very aggressive.

“Obviously, they have players with a lot of quality. But we are so, so ambitious, so now the only thing that we want is to improve every day, keep working, and we will see where we are in May.”

The message is straightforward: Fulham cannot afford to be passive.

Arbeloa wants his players to impose themselves, particularly in an away fixture where Sunderland’s supporters could make the Stadium of Light an intimidating venue.

Fulham’s defeat against Chelsea showed both sides of Arbeloa’s new team.

They conceded early and fell behind, but responded with character and eventually pushed the visitors deep into their own territory during the second half.

The result did not go their way, but the performance provided glimpses of the football Arbeloa wants to establish.

The 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon then offered the perfect opportunity to build momentum.

Sunderland will present a considerably tougher challenge, though.

With both sides looking for their first league win, Sunday promises to be a battle of response, intensity and execution.

For Fulham, Arbeloa’s demand for aggression could be the difference.

Arbeloa is still in the early stages of his Fulham project, and the Spaniard has repeatedly stressed the importance of developing his team’s identity.

That process will take time, but the manager wants his players to embrace the demands rather than hide from them.

Against Sunderland, that means matching the hosts physically, staying composed under pressure and maintaining the attacking intent that Arbeloa expects.

Fulham will also need to manage the occasion. The Stadium of Light is likely to be loud, intense and unforgiving, particularly if Sunderland make a fast start.

The Cottagers have already shown they can respond to setbacks.

Now Arbeloa wants to see whether they can take that mentality onto the road.
