Alexis Mac Allister has revealed the painful truth behind his Liverpool contract situation, admitting he was left “very, very sad” after the club decided not to offer him a new deal.
The Argentina international opened up about the situation ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, confirming that the decision was communicated to him during the summer.
Mac Allister was particularly disappointed after watching midfield teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure new contracts while he was not offered one.

“Because I think everyone can see that I give my 100% for this club, every single day in training, games … I always give my best.
“Of course, for example, I see Dominik [Szoboszlai] and Ryan [Gravenberch], renewing their contracts, and that makes me very happy because I deserve it.
“But it also makes me a little sad that I didn’t get mine.
“There were options to leave this summer, and I think right now I’m in the right club, and I have the right mindset to give 100% for this club.”
Mac Allister’s decision to remain at Anfield is significant, particularly given that opportunities to leave were available during the summer.
Rather than push for an exit, he chose to continue fighting for his place and contribute to Liverpool’s ambitions.
That commitment will now be tested across a season packed with fixtures.
Liverpool are preparing to begin their Champions League league phase against Atletico Madrid, with Iraola facing his first major European test as the club’s new manager.
The Spaniard was asked whether he expects Mac Allister’s contract situation to change, but stopped short of making any promises.
“At the end, we all have personal situations, we all have different contracts with the club. In this case for me the important thing is that he wants to be here,” he said.
“In the footballing side, we haven’t been together a lot of time but … But he has been important and has played a lot of minutes, that I rate him very highly. And definitely, there is time to talk about those contract situations.”
For Iraola, the most important development is that Mac Allister remains focused on football.
The midfielder has established himself as a key part of Liverpool’s squad, and the manager believes there is plenty of time for discussions over his future.
“I’ve not had any conversations with him about it [the contract], but when I see the way he wants us to play I think this can be a successful year. This is why this is the right club and the right moment to be here,” Iraola said.
“I want to win trophies. We have the right players and right mentality to go and do great things but everyone had to be on the same page.”
For now, Mac Allister’s message is simple.
The contract disappointment hurts, but it has not changed his commitment.
He has chosen Liverpool despite having alternatives, and with Champions League football arriving, the Argentine has another opportunity to prove his value on the biggest stage.
The contract may remain unresolved.
