Real Madrid have launched a fierce public attack on LaLiga president Javier Tebas, accusing the league chief of repeatedly targeting the Spanish giants and failing to maintain the neutrality expected from his position.
The club released an official statement in response to recent comments made by Tebas, with Madrid expressing strong dissatisfaction over what they described as his continued public criticism.
Real Madrid claimed Tebas had gone beyond his institutional responsibilities by commenting on the club’s sporting strategy while reacting to an article written by an independent journalist.
The Spanish giants made their position clear in an unusually strong statement.
“In light of the statements made by LaLiga President Javier Tebas Medrano, Real Madrid C.F. wishes to state the following:
“Our club considers it intolerable for the LaLiga President to use his institutional position to repeatedly disparage and attack Real Madrid in the manner he does in every one of his public statements.
“It is deeply concerning that the person responsible for representing and protecting the interests of all LaLiga clubs remains obsessively fixated on Real Madrid, making our club a constant target of his public attacks.”
Madrid then turned their attention to Tebas’ latest intervention, describing it as particularly serious and questioning why the LaLiga president had involved himself in a debate surrounding the club’s sporting decisions.
“His latest intervention is particularly serious and incomprehensible—unbecoming of a responsible administrator—as it involves commenting on an article by an independent journalist in a digital media outlet.
“Yet, he reacts against our club by taking the liberty of critiquing our sporting strategy—an utterly absurd and irresponsible move.”
The statement escalated further as Real Madrid accused Tebas of using his personal platforms to publicly criticise the club rather than focusing on building confidence in LaLiga’s institutions.
“It is astonishing that the LaLiga President devotes his time and personal channels to publicly discrediting Real Madrid, rather than using his position to foster trust in the institutions charged with guaranteeing the competition’s impartiality.
“In doing so, he continues to damage the image of our competition and of Spanish football worldwide.”
Real Madrid’s statement then moved beyond criticism of Tebas’ comments and questioned whether he was the right person to continue leading LaLiga.
The club called for a different approach to the leadership of Spanish professional football, placing particular emphasis on neutrality and the responsibilities attached to the role.
“Given this persistent and inappropriate behavior, we believe that professional football in Spain urgently needs a leader capable of managing the competition and unlocking its full potential while upholding the fundamental duty of neutrality.
“It needs someone who understands the nature of the role; the LaLiga President is not the owner of the competition, but an administrator serving the clubs that comprise it and have entrusted him with its leadership.
“We, the clubs, need someone who will honestly serve this mission.”
The extraordinary statement highlights the depth of the relationship between Real Madrid and the LaLiga president, with the club making clear that it believes Tebas has repeatedly crossed the line expected of his institutional position.
Madrid’s criticism also places the broader governance of Spanish football under the spotlight, particularly the relationship between LaLiga’s leadership and the clubs it represents.
For now, the dispute has moved firmly into the public arena.
Real Madrid have made their position unmistakable, while Tebas’ comments have triggered one of the strongest official responses from the club in recent times.
The latest confrontation adds another chapter to the long-running tension between Real Madrid and the LaLiga leadership, with the Spanish giants now openly questioning the league president’s approach to his role.
