Robertson reveals Tottenham Hotspur move was conditional on survival

Andy Robertson has revealed that Tottenham’s Premier League survival was a key condition before he agreed to join the club.

The 32-year-old completed his move to Spurs this summer after leaving Liverpool when his contract at Anfield expired.

However, Robertson has admitted that his next destination could have been very different if Tottenham had suffered relegation.

The Scotland international had other options available after it became clear that his long spell with Liverpool was coming to an end.

But Tottenham quickly emerged as the destination he wanted, provided they remained in the Premier League.

“It was always Tottenham, as long as they stayed up,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast.

“At that point, I didn’t quite want to go to the Championship with Tottenham, so I ended up then getting invested in Tottenham.

“I was watching Tottenham. Especially when De Zerbi came in, I was fully confident.

“They showed their interest first, and they really wanted me, and I was happy with how much they wanted me.”

Robertson’s comments offer an insight into how closely he followed Tottenham’s situation before making the switch to north London.

The defender was not prepared to drop into the Championship, but the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi helped convince him that Tottenham’s future remained at the highest level.

Once Spurs secured their Premier League status, the path was effectively clear for Robertson to make the move.

The former Liverpool defender arrived in north London with a wealth of experience behind him, having spent years competing for major honours at Anfield.

His Liverpool career included two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League, where Liverpool defeated Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

That European final adds an interesting layer to Robertson’s move, with the defender now joining the club he helped defeat on one of the biggest nights in its history.

Despite having other offers, Robertson says Tottenham’s determination to sign him played a major role in his decision.

The club’s interest was clear from the beginning, and that conviction mattered to the experienced defender.

Robertson also appears to have bought into the direction of the club after De Zerbi arrived, with the manager’s appointment strengthening his belief in the project.

Now, instead of watching Tottenham’s battle from the outside, Robertson is part of the squad tasked with helping the club push forward.

His move may have depended on Spurs staying up, but once that hurdle was cleared, Robertson knew where he wanted to be.
