Aberdeen hit with 500-ticket blow after League Cup incidents

Aberdeen have been hit with a 500-ticket reduction for their Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers after the SPFL concluded disciplinary proceedings over two serious incidents involving their supporters.

The punishment follows Aberdeen’s quarter-final clash with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on September 12, where the Dons secured their place in the last four after a dramatic penalty shootout.

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes before Aberdeen prevailed 3-1 on penalties to book their semi-final meeting with Rangers.

However, the result has now been overshadowed by the sanction handed down by the Scottish Professional Football League.

The SPFL opened proceedings into what it described as a “large-scale organised and illegal pyrotechnics display” as well as a pitch incursion during the quarter-final.

Those proceedings have now concluded, with Aberdeen facing an immediate reduction of 500 tickets from their allocation for the semi-final at Hampden Park.

The match against Rangers is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, meaning Aberdeen supporters will have fewer tickets available for one of the biggest fixtures of their League Cup campaign.

The SPFL confirmed the punishment in a statement.

“The SPFL can confirm that Aberdeen have been sanctioned following the behaviour of the club’s supporters during their Premier Sports Cup quarter-final match, away at Kilmarnock.

“Proceedings into two separate serious incidents – a large scale organised and illegal pyrotechnics display, and a pitch incursion – at the club’s 1-1 draw at BBSP Rugby Park on 12 September, which Aberdeen won 3-1 on penalties, have now concluded.

“The club received the following sanction:

“(i) An immediate reduction of 500 tickets from the club’s ticket allocation for the Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden Park on Saturday October 31. The club is required to cover the cost of these tickets as part of this sanction.

The decision means Aberdeen will not only lose 500 places from their semi-final allocation but will also be required to cover the cost of those tickets as part of the sanction.

For Aberdeen, the focus will now turn towards managing the consequences while preparing for their meeting with Rangers.

The Dons fought through a tense quarter-final against Kilmarnock to reach the semi-finals, but the incidents surrounding the game have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of supporters who can attend the Hampden showdown.

The clash with Rangers is now set to carry an additional storyline, with Aberdeen attempting to reach the Premier Sports Cup final despite the disruption caused by the sanction.

The SPFL’s decision also sends a clear message regarding supporter behaviour at matches, particularly incidents involving pyrotechnics and pitch incursions.

Aberdeen will now have to work within the reduced allocation as they prepare for the October 31 semi-final.

After surviving the quarter-final through penalties, the Dons have earned their place among the final four. Their challenge now is to ensure the attention returns to what happens on the pitch when they face Rangers at Hampden Park.
