England’s Pickford admits careless driving after Lamborghini incident

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is facing a court hearing after admitting to careless driving following an incident involving his £200,000 Lamborghini in Cheshire.

The Everton goalkeeper, 32, was stopped by police in Knutsford on April 14 after allegedly ignoring a give-way sign and forcing two other vehicles to brake suddenly to avoid a collision.

Pickford, who has 92 England caps and 336 appearances for Everton, pleaded guilty to driving without due care or attention through the Single Justice Procedure.

However, rather than simply accepting the initial penalty, the England international has asked to appear before a court so he can present his mitigation.

The incident unfolded in the affluent Cheshire town of Knutsford, where Pickford was driving his blue Lamborghini Urus with personalised registration plates.

According to court documents, Cheshire Police officer Pc Cecil Ricardo was leaving the police station when he spotted the vehicle.

“I was stationary on Bexton Road, Knutsford, waiting for traffic signals to turn green,” he wrote.

“I then witnessed a blue Lamborghini Urus driving along Princess Street.

“It reached the junction with Toft Road, completely ignored the give way lines and pulled onto Toft Road causing two vehicles to slam on their brakes to avoid a collision.

“The Lamborghini then sped down Toft Road, Knutsford.”

The officer then began following Pickford after activating his police vehicle’s lights and siren.

Pc Ricardo said he was travelling at 50mph while attempting to catch the Lamborghini, but the goalkeeper’s vehicle was “still pulling away.”

The speed limit on that section of Toft Road was 30mph, according to the officer.

“The speed limit on that stretch of Toft Road, Knutsford, is 30mph,” he noted.

Police eventually caught up with Pickford after he appeared to notice the pursuing vehicle and pulled over.

The England No. 1 subsequently admitted the offence in writing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court but requested a full hearing to explain his circumstances.

Pickford told the court: “I would like to attend court to put forward my mitigation.”

His case was formally adjourned last week and is now scheduled to be heard at Chester Magistrates’ Court on December 7.

The incident comes during a remarkable period in Pickford’s international career.

The Sunderland academy product has established himself as England’s first-choice goalkeeper and has represented the Three Lions at three World Cups, including the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.

He also played a prominent role during England’s runs to the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals.

Pickford began his senior career at Sunderland before gaining experience through loan spells with six clubs, including Burton Albion, Bradford City and Preston North End.

He eventually returned to Sunderland before securing his move to Everton, where he has gone on to become one of the Premier League’s most recognisable goalkeepers.

For now, however, the focus is away from the pitch. Pickford will have to wait until December to explain his mitigation before the court and learn what punishment, if any, will follow his guilty plea.
