Wales winger Matondo joins Hibernian after Rangers exit

Rabbi Matondo has secured a fresh opportunity in Scotland after completing a move to Hibernian on a deal running until the end of the season.

The Wales international joins Hibs as a free agent following a trial spell that immediately caught the attention of the Easter Road club. Matondo made the most of his opportunity, scoring twice and registering two assists across just two matches.

Hibernian have also negotiated an option to keep the winger beyond the current campaign, with the club able to extend his contract for another 12 months.

The move gives Matondo the chance to rebuild his momentum after a difficult spell in Norway. The 26-year-old left Rangers in March after making 70 appearances for the Scottish giants over four years before moving to Brann.

His time in Norway, however, proved brief. Matondo managed only three appearances for Brann before his contract was terminated towards the latter stages of the summer transfer window, leaving him available to explore his next move.

Hibernian’s decision to bring him in followed his impressive trial performances, where his pace, attacking intent and ability to create opportunities quickly stood out.

The winger began his football education at Cardiff City before joining Manchester City’s youth setup. His senior career has subsequently taken him across England, Germany, Belgium, Scotland and Norway, with spells at FC Schalke 04, Stoke City, Cercle Brugge KSV and Rangers.

Now back in Scotland, Matondo will hope his move to Hibernian provides the platform for a sustained run of performances and regular first-team football.

Hibernian manager Marink Reedijk was impressed by what he saw from the winger during his trial and believes Matondo can bring a different dimension to the team’s attack.

“He made an immediate impression during our time in La Manga and has shown a great attitude, strong application, and a real willingness to learn and adapt.

“Rabbi gives us pace, directness and a real threat in wide areas, while also bringing a positive personality into the dressing room.”

Those qualities could make Matondo an important addition for Hibs as the season progresses. His ability to operate in wide areas, stretch defences and attack space gives the club another option in the final third.

For Matondo, the priority will be to turn his impressive trial into consistent performances when competitive football resumes. After an unsettled period that included a short-lived move to Norway, the winger now has the security of a contract and the opportunity to establish himself at Easter Road.

His immediate impact during the trial has already generated optimism around the move, but the bigger test will be whether he can maintain that level across the remainder of the campaign.

With Hibernian holding an option to extend his stay, Matondo has a clear incentive to make his latest chapter in Scotland a successful one. The winger will now look to repay the club’s faith and turn his promising start into a productive season.
