Unai Emery has hailed Aston Villa’s historic 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahçe as a “fantastic night” after his side delivered a statement performance in the UEFA Champions League.
Villa overwhelmed the Turkish giants at Villa Park on Wednesday, October 14, recording the biggest European victory in the club’s history and maintaining their perfect start to this season’s competition with two wins from two matches.
The emphatic result also gave Emery his first home victory of the Champions League campaign, providing Villa supporters with a memorable night as the Premier League side continued to build momentum in Europe.
Speaking after the match, Emery expressed his delight at the performance while insisting that his team must continue improving if they are to compete consistently against Europe’s elite.
“Fantastic night, fantastic,” said the Villa boss.
“Champions League is the competition where we can feel comfortable and competing in the direction we did today, the direction we did in the first match against Brugge.
“Of course, it’s very difficult. We are not contenders to get this trophy. There are a lot of teams, very important teams and very powerful teams to be contenders and to be favourites to win this competition.
“But two years ago, we achieved quarter-finals through our consistency, through our ambitions, through our demands, and how we started this season in this competition is really fantastic.
“To enjoy with our supporters, days like tonight, against a team like Fenerbahçe, the result is so much for them. Today is a good night for the supporters, for us, here in Villa Park, the first win.
“Hopefully, those improvements we achieved today, and as well how we are progressing, getting better but not being enough, hopefully we will achieve again on Saturday against Newcastle, those improvements, competing like we want and building the team like the way we need.”
The victory represents another encouraging sign for Emery as he continues to shape his squad following the summer transfer window. The Aston Villa manager was particularly pleased with the contributions of Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi and Ibrahim Mbaye, whose performances reflected the growing competition for places within the team.
Emery believes the arrival and integration of new players will be crucial as Villa attempt to balance their domestic commitments with the demands of European football.
“Big contributions (from) those players, but as well, some changes. We need to add players competing, getting fit, feeling comfortable in our structure.
“Some ones, they are progressively getting better and showing it like Mbaye, like Manzambi – of course, after his injury, he is progressively feeling comfortable, today he scored one goal.
“Nicolas Jackson, as well, he is feeling better and better. But we need more players. We need as well in different competitions to be trying to be focused and demanding in the direction we want to build for this season.
“Our start was very poor, but progressively we are getting better, and in the Champions League especially, analysing the match we played today and in Bruges – really fantastic.
“But, keep going, because it’s coming, more matches and difficult matches and now after it, my focus is on Saturday against Newcastle and the players must be so, so focused for it, and keep improving things and working things every day to try to get better.”
Despite the record-breaking scoreline, Emery was quick to shift attention towards Villa’s next challenge, with Newcastle United awaiting them on Saturday.
The Spanish coach knows that maintaining their current European form will require consistency, particularly as the fixture schedule intensifies and tougher tests emerge.
Villa’s impressive start in the Champions League has strengthened belief around Villa Park, but Emery remains realistic about their chances of lifting the trophy. Rather than placing his side among the favourites, he has emphasised steady improvement, squad development and the importance of approaching every match with the right mentality.
For Villa, the 6-0 triumph offers more than three points. It delivers a historic European milestone, boosts confidence within the squad and reinforces the sense that Emery’s team can compete strongly on the continental stage.
The challenge now is to turn Wednesday’s spectacular performance into a sustained run of results, beginning with their Premier League meeting against Newcastle.
